Most Brazilians have just one name, and many of them base it upon their first name, surname name, a combination of the two, or an unconnected nickname. It’s not only Brazilian football players that do this. Brazil still follows Portuguese name customs despite no longer being a Portuguese territory.
People are given four names according to these traditions: their given name, which frequently consists of two letters to accommodate a saint’s name and/or a prefix (such as da, das, do, dos, or de), the mother’s surname name, and finally the father’s last name. The creation of a nickname based on the parents’ first names is customary in several regions of Brazil.
