Yesterday’s AFCON Results: Groups C and E

Aaron Boupendza stepped up in the absence of Gabon’s COVID-stricken captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to earn Gabon a hard-fought 1-0 victory against debutants Comoros in yesterday’s Group C fixture in Yaoundé. The striker, playing his club football in Qatar scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute when he smashed the ball high into the roof of the net past helpless Comoros goalkeeper Ali Ahmada. With star men Aubameyang and Lemina returning soon, Gabon got off to a perfect start to their AFCON campaign with this result.

The Group E clash between Algeria and Sierra Leone saw the defending champions of the Africa Cup of Nations held to an underwhelming goalless draw by a spirited Sierra Leone side. Riyad Mahrez’s side struggled to break down the underdogs in the match all game, with Yacine Brahimi missing the only real clear-cut chance of the game. The result means that Algeria’s chied Group E rivals Ivory Coast can seize the early lead in the group by beating Equatorial Guinea later today.

Yesterday’s AFCON Results: Group D

Both the opening matches of Group D at the AFCON were played out yesterday. Kelechi Iheanacho’s stunning strike earned Nigeria a well-deserved 1-0 win against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the group’s opening game. Pharaohs captain Salah was unable to inspire his team to victory despite being highly regarded as title favourites before. Egypt were second best all game and must improve soon if they want to have any hope of progressing.
