With Portugal’s defeat to Morocco in the quarterfinal at Qatar 2022, Portugal’a dreams of winning a maiden World Cup have been extinguished for another four years. And the door may have now been permanently closed on Cristiano Ronaldo.

World Cup is the one trophy that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career, and the 37-year-old was hoping that with a strong team around him, he would be able to have the ultimate swansong in what is almost certainly his final major international tournament.

The former Real Madrid superstar scored his team’s first goal of the tournament, finding the back of the net with a penalty against Ghana. However, things did not go according to plan for him afterward.

Santos ,the Portugal manager notably dropped Ronaldo from the starting line-up to face Switzerland in the Round of 16 after he reacted angrily to being substituted against South Korea. Cristiano Ronaldo also was named on the bench for the match against Morocco on Saturday.

“I’m still motivated. My ambition is really high”, he said, “I’m in a national team with a lot of youngsters. I want to be in the World Cup and at Euros. I want to make that commitment now.” Said Ronaldo in September 2022 about his plans to not retire from international football.
