Brentford vs Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City are just two of the most awaited games that have been postponed due the virus. This was actually Spurs’ second game that was postponed in the league due to this. What does it really mean, then?
PL decided to put a halt to games back in March of 2020 and the season resumed deep into the year after the Covid situation improved. But this Omicron variant is wreaking havoc and spreading fast. Many people have called for the Premier League to be suspended. So, has the PL reached a verdict? And can they really suspend the PL?
What does this mean for the teams and will Premier League be suspended?
The answer is no, yes, or maybe. It can be anything. But thinking logically, the PL would have been suspended the moment Tottenham’s first game was postponed. The fact that it was not, and the Leicester played a few games despite the Covid outbreak, shows the league really doesn’t want to suspend it- perhaps for monetary reasons.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank has even asked all PL fixtures to be postponed until all this is contained. He said in an interview:
“We think we should postpone the full round of Premier League games this weekend. Covid cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs, everyone is dealing with it and having problems.”
So, PL has not suspended league games as a whole right now. They will wait to see how this situation develops and teams that have controlled the outbreak will play their games. However, if it keeps on increasing, Premier League has every right to suspend whole rounds of fixtures and it is a likely future scenario.
