The Brazilian international, whose tenure at PSG has been marred by several fitness issues, was taken off the field on a stretcher following his team’s victory against Lille. Neymar was emotionally helped off the pitch as PSG barely edged out a thrilling 4-3 victory after colliding with Dogues player Benjamin Andre and twisting his ankle in the process.
The degree of Neymar’s injury was not disclosed, and the club has not given a timeline for his recovery. Les Parisiens did announce that he had injured his ankle during the game. Le Parisien has since reported that the Brazilian will be absent for three to four weeks, excluding him from the March 8 trip towards the Allianz Arena.
While Neymar did not suffer any fractures throughout the incident, he will miss important Ligue 1 matches against Marseille and Nantes this month and his participation in games versus Brest and Rennes throughout March is also in question due to partly torn ligaments.
Since joining PSG in 2017, the former Barcelona player has missed 104 games due to injury or sickness. He also had ankle issues in 2019 and three more years, 2020 and 2021. The attacker faced a similar problem during the World Cup when he suffered an ankle injury during Brazil’s opening victory over Serbia. But, he was able to play in the knockout rounds despite Selecao’s quarterfinal loss to Croatia since he was able to recuperate in time.
After Sunday’s triumph, Christophe Galtier spoke to the media and claimed that Neymar’s physical issues were not the result of “poor luck,” but rather were due to the punishing schedule of games. Kingsley Coman scored the lone goal during the opening leg at the Parc des Princes, so Galtier’s team will have one goal to make up for when they arrive at the Allianz Arena on March 8.
In addition to his numerous ankle issues, Neymar missed two Champions League last-16 matches in 2018 and 2019 versus Real Madrid and Manchester United due to foot fractures. Without Neymar, Paris Saint-Germain lost to Real on aggregate 5-2 before Man United won their two-leg matchup in the 2018–19 season on away goals, sending them out of the tournament both times.
Before suffering an injury on Sunday, Neymar assisted Kylian Mbappe and scored in the victory against Lille, bringing his season total to an amazing 18 goals & 17 assists through 29 appearances across all competitions. With Bafode Diakite, Jonathan Bamba, and Jonathan David, Les Dogues threatened to mount a stunning comeback after falling 2-0, but Mbappe and a last-second Lionel Messi free-kick prevented PSG from going four games without a victory.
