Messi has won a good number of Ballon d’Or awards—seven to be exact—but that number may now be elevated to Super Ballon d’Or. Considering that only one individual player has ever received that award, you’ll be pardoned for not truly understanding what it is.
The award in itself is a more exaggerated version of the Ballon d’Or, with a crystal urn holding a golden ball and miniature versions of the ball adorning the base of the urn.
Should a player ever be thought to be outstanding enough to have merited one, the Super Ballon d’Or is believed to be given to the best-performing footballer of the past 30 years. The only other winner of the prize is Alfredo di Stefano, who took up the top honour in 1989 after making outstanding contributions to Real Madrid.
The Super Ballon d’Or winner was revealed on December 24, 1989, and the award was awarded to commemorate France Football Magazine’s 30th anniversary. A player may only be nominated if they were born in a European country at the time Di Stefano received the Super Ballon d’Or.
Alfredo di Stefano helped Real Madrid win five consecutive European Cups in the late 1950s, beating out Michel Platini and Johan Cruyff for the honour. The award hasn’t been granted since, but since Messi and Argentina won the World Cup, France Football may start to do so again. The Rosario native scored approximately 800 goals and contributed 388 assists in 1,025 appearances for both club and country during the course of his brilliant playing career.
Although it hasn’t been proven yet, it seems completely possible that Messi may win this Super Ballon d’Or, and nobody could really argue with that.
