Derby County have been one of the most famous English clubs since they were founded in 1884, making them one of the oldest clubs in the English footballing sphere. Two-time First Division champions in 1972 and 1975, it is surprising to see them fall so low as to being the bottom-placed team in the Championship this season.
But how did that come about? Derby, who were last relegated from the Premier League in the 2007/08 season with a record low of 11 points, are now 24th in the Championship with just 7 points. So, we are forced to question, Will Derby County be relegated this season?
How many points were Derby County deducted in the 2021/22 Championship season and why?
Derby County have been deducted a total of 21 points this season. The first penalty came this summer when the club entered administration. Entering administration entails an automatic 12-point penalty, which the Rams unsuccessfully appealed as well.
But the real blow came this November. Derby, managed by Wayne Rooney, were deducted 9 points on 16th November 2021 for fluting and evading English Football League financial fair-play regulations. That has now left them with a total of 21 points being reduced from their season’s points tally.
So, will Derby County be relegated in the 2021/22 Championship season?
As it looks like right now, they will be playing in Football League One, the third division of English football, next season. Derby sit 24th in the league with just 7 points from 23 games. That is harsh on them considering they have 6 wins and 10 draws so far this season- which means they effectively stand at 28 points.
That would have seen them 15th in the table right now. But they only have themselves to blame and for breaching financial fair-play rules. They are 14 points away from 20th-placed Reading, who also have a game in hand. Relegation is a near 100% certainty now unless they go on a long winning streak and other teams around them falter..
If they go by their current average of getting 1.2 points a game, they will end the season with 33 points in the ideal scenario. That is a dangerously low total with last season’s safety cut-off being 49.
