By the time he turns 38 in two months, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will already be among the oldest players in all of the top football divisions. In the same vein, he will be 41 by the World Cup, putting himself four years younger than Essam El-Hadary, who is the oldest player to compete in the World Cup Tournament.
Even if there have been rumours to the contrary, the former Manchester United star is now unattached and has had trouble at every turn this season. In a peculiar interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo voiced his disapproval of the club’s board of directors and management, which sent his club career into a tailspin and forced the club to agree to let him leave.
His international career nearly came to an end when manager Fernando Santos benched him for the Round of 16 match against Switzerland, which Portugal won 6-1 in part due to an outstanding hat-trick from his inexperienced, unproven replacement from Benfica, Gonçalo Ramos.
Ronaldo had stated in September 2022 that he would not be retiring and that he intended to remain with the team to compete in the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. “I continue to be inspired. “I’m on a national squad with a large number of young players, and my ambitions are pretty high,” he stated. “The World Cup and the Euros are something I want to attend. That’s a commitment I want to make right away.”
Ronaldo stated that he wanted “to end at 40” in the previous interview with Piers Morgan, changing his position and leaving his retirement choices more open than previously. “I believe that 40 will be a nice age, but I’m not sure because I don’t know what the future holds.”
Ronaldo will turn 38 in February 2023, making him 41 by the time the next World Cup rolls around. Luis Enrique, Roberto Martnez, Tite, Eden Hazard, etc. are just a few of the players that have left the competition or retired after being eliminated.
