Will Chelsea sack Graham Potter? Preview

On the surface, Potter’s situation doesn’t appear to be good. For the initial time since 1998, Chelsea was eliminated from the FA Cup in the third round after failing to manage even one shot against City in the first half. The Fulham loss didn’t do anything to change the situation.

The Blues did not make contact with City until the 54th minute, and their overall expected goals (xG) of 0.09 were their lowest in the previous five seasons. When contrasting Potter’s performance with those of his predecessors, recent history has remained unforgiving. Dating back to the disastrous 2011–12 season under Andre Villas-Boas.

Although with a far smaller sample size of only 25 games in charge, Potter has the poorest points-per-game performance of any permanent Chelsea manager across all competitions.  Does Potter’s miserable 12-game stretch for Chelsea in all competitions—which included just two victories, six losses, and five ties—count as a career-ending slump when compared to those who have come before him? No doubt, this is what the evidence shows.

Nobody produced a poorer performance than Potter’s recent slump when looking at the players above’s last 12 games. Even Jose Mourinho’s shambolic slide, in which his second stint as Chelsea manager concluded with the team one point well above the relegation zone, included four victories and five losses along the final stretch. Although the former was aided by FA Cup victories against lower-league teams Morecambe and Luton Town, Lampard and Tuchel both won five of their following 12 games. Both Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri left their respective positions with victories in cup finals, which adds to the general discussion regarding Chelsea and the coaches they choose.

For the time being, Potter is Boehly’s man, however for him to avoid following in the footsteps of others who came before him, a historically poor run of the form needs to ease. In terms of the newest Cobham graduates having some experience in the first team, Potter’s selections were influenced by an injury crisis just as Lampard’s were by the transfer restriction.

More than £500 million was spent on new players by the Blues during the January transfer window as a result of Boehly’s scattershot hiring strategy. This has resulted in disjointed performances, like the one against Southampton, in which players appeared to rely more on lone dribbles than systematic and logical team styles of play as they decided to seek an equaliser.

At this point, coaches with more experience and medals than Potter, up through and including Tuchel, have been fired from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea supporters are already mentioning the German, so Potter needs to show them right away that his initiative is worthwhile.

A unified style of play could start to develop now that players like Reece James and Ben Chilwell are once again available due to the cruelness of injuries. The present ineffectual shunts between formations raise concerns since they show a lack of confidence from a person who was selected based on his bold ideas.

It was intimated that some individuals aren’t purchasing what Potter is offering by the ludicrous performance of some seasoned experts in Manchester. For now, if the results aren’t appropriate for Todd Boehly, Graham Potter will be immediately sacked. It’s not a matter of ‘If’, it’s a matter of ‘When’ now. It is sad to see Graham Potter not succeed at Chelsea after a wonderful managerial career at Brighton.
