Why were the Premier League games postponed this weekend?- Several matches called off due to Covid-19
This weekend has seen a lot of Premier League games being called off. It all started with the Manchester United vs Brighton and Hove Albion as being the first game being called off, but it then resulted in as many as five Premier League games being called off on Saturday, 18th December 2021.
But why have these games being called off? Is there a reason behind it? There very well is, and this could well just be a trailer of what is about to follow. Alley Sport helps you find out the reason behind these games being postponed this weekend.
Why were the Premier League games postponed this weekend
The Premier League games have been postponed this weekend due to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom. The new variant is spreading rapidly and while there aren’t many casualties due to it, it is still a potent threat to everyone.

Players have to self-isolate as a rule because of the virus and must be in self-isolation for at least 10 days until they can return a negative test to be able to play. This has meant that several teams are without some of their most influential players. The Premier League has the full power to call of games if it deems a team is unable to play due to the number of injury or fitness issues.

For example, some teams have just 1 case while others have several, such as Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City, who had their games postponed this weekend.
All in all, 5 games were postponed on Saturday including Man United vs Brighton, Watford vs Crystal Palace, Aston Villa vs Burnley, West Ham United vs Norwich City, and Southampton vs Brentford. Arsenal vs Leeds United was the only game that went ahead, as the Gunners won 4-1. As for Sunday, Everton vs Leicester City is already called off and postponed to a later date but the specifics for it are not yet known.
