Even though most City supporters still believe that Manchester United is their biggest rival, many now argue that Liverpool F.C. is. This rivalry has been rekindled in recent years as a result of City’s ascent to prominence after their 2008 takeover and their resurgence as one of the top teams in England after a brief absence from the top flight at the end of the 20th century.

Both Manchester teams are considered to be among the greatest in the world; in recent years, they have both routinely advanced to the later stages of the UEFA Champions League and are among the top five football teams in terms of income. Read Why Man United Fans Are Called Rags? Till The End.

Manchester, therefore, is now considered a football city along the lines of cities like Madrid and Milan. However, because City collapses from the top of the league after their golden age until their recent ascent, the two teams are perceived as opposed, with City being perceived as the nouveau riche compared to United’s old money.

Historically, the two fan bases have been completely at odds with one another. City’s supporters accuse United of being haughty and trying to use media and regulatory manipulation to make the Premier League into a closed shop for elite clubs only, while United’s supporters accuse City of using their club’s funds as a means of achieving success.

In a novel twist on a cross-city rivalry, the supporters of the two teams also accuse one another of not representing their cities. The blue half of the city notes that their opponents don’t play in Manchester (at Trafford), so they don’t deserve to be called that, while the red half debates which team has more supporters in the city.

Referencing United as the club for the locals and claiming that United supporters fly in from Europe and Asia or go up from London, City supporters frequently make fun of United supporters for being tourists, a jab at United’s worldwide fan base.

Following on from this City fans have often called United “Plastics” or “Glory Supporters” because of their on-the-field dominance over several decades that made the club hugely popular with football supporters outside of Manchester.

In turn, due to the growth of City’s global status following their 2008 takeover which brought an upturn in success on the field, United fans have said many plastic fans have jumped on City’s bandwagon. Due to United’s use of City’s Maine Road stadium during World War II—after the Luftwaffe attacked Old Trafford—the moniker “Rags” is most frequently used by City supporters to refer to their cross-town rivals. At the time, United was so impoverished that they were forced to wear kits, which eventually began to look like old rags.

While United fans refer to the City of Manchester Stadium as the “Emptyhad,” City fans refer to United’s stadium as “The Swamp.” This is a well-known anti-City joke that is based on the myth that some City home games have visible light blue empty seats, which causes United to play on the words “Empty” and “Etihad.”
