International breaks in football are a pain for every football fan, as Alley Sport reveals Why Is There No Football this Weekend? and the reason behind this unusual January break.

Football has been affected by the pandemic, with several fixtures having to be rescheduled in the end of 2021. The fixture congestion has also caused troubles in various football leagues, as it is also an issue with an international tournament on the horizon. Several continents are yet to conclude with the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers round, and need space to conduct the postponed fixtures.
Why Is There No Football this Weekend?

In the light of the fixture congestion and postponements due to the pandemic, FIFA has created this unusual one-off January international break this weekend. This break is to allow non-UEFA national teams to catch up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, that were postponed in the September break due to COVID-19 reasons. This break would not involve various teams, and would be a much needed break for some football clubs.

The UEFA version of the qualifiers have already come to a conclusion, with the playoffs remaining to be completed in the month of March. The AFC, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF qualifiers would be scheduled to take place this month, while the African Cup of Nations is currently underway, with its conclusion in mid-February.
International Fixtures to look forward to this break

Even though the break doesn’t involve various UEFA nations, it has still some interesting fixtures to look forward to. The AFCON round of 16 and quarterfinals are underway this week, with Ivory Coast taking on Mo Salah’s Egypt, and Sadio Mane’s Senegal take on Cape Verde (RO16). In North America, USA and Canada face off, while CONMEBOL involves the likes of Brazil and Argentina in action for their qualifier games.
