On the south side of the city, in the titular working-class neighbourhood, was where Athletic’s original stadium, the Ronda de Vallecas, was located. The Ciudad Universitaria neighbourhood saw the 1919 acquisition of certain land by the Compaa Urbanizadora Metropolitana, the organisation in charge of Madrid’s subterranean connection network.
Athletic Madrid separated from its parent club Athletic Bilbao in 1921, and the team then relocated to the Estadio Metropolitano de Madrid, a 35,800-seat stadium constructed by the same business. Prior to their transfer to the brand-new Estadio Vicente Calderón in 1966, they continued to use the Metropolitano. The Metropolitano was dismantled after the relocation and was replaced with academic buildings and an office building owned by the corporation ENUSA.
Most sports teams and games have nicknames that are well-known to the public; sometimes these nicknames are used in a complimentary manner, and other times negatively. Why is Atlético Madrid called Indian? Well, there’s no 100% explanation for this but it can be considered an assumption.
Because the Athletico club mattress made several South American player signings in the 1970s (Heredia, Ayala, baker Diaz), the Athletico supporters were “baptized” as Indians for their rival Real Madrid. Their long hair and dark skin were to blame for this mole.
Over time, Atletico supporters and the team itself proudly accepted this moniker rather than viewing it as offensive, to the point where tifos and enormous mosaics in the stands make reference to the Indians and the club mascot is a raccoon going by the name “Indi” in Indian. Another far less popular hypothesis claims that athletic Native Americans live near rivers (the Calderon was near the Manzanares River) and that they despise white people (in reference to Real Madrid).
