Nobody anticipated that two centuries after it was built, the Cibeles Fountain in the heart of Madrid would become the gathering spot for Real Madrid supporters following each trophy victory when it was built in 1782. Celebrating in Cibeles, however, didn’t become a truly Real Madrid custom until the 1980s, the decade of Real Madrid’s storied Quinta del Buitre team. With five consecutive LaLiga Santander championships from 1985 and 1990, they undoubtedly had a lot to celebrate there.
The goddess became a lifelong Madridista as a result of Atletico Madrid’s 1980s trophy drought and Real Madrid’s “addiction” to trophies. Atleti’s supporters chose to transfer their celebrations 500 metres along the Paseo del Prado to Neptuno, or “Neptune’s Fountain,” when the team started winning once more with a pair of Copa del Rey victories in 1991 and 1992.
Just for Los Blancos, they departed from Cibeles. The captains get the honour of donning Cibeles in team colours following a significant victory when Real Madrid does celebrate there. With a plethora of titles to his name since taking on the captain’s role in 2015, ex-captain Sergio Ramos has indeed gone through this a number of times.

Every time I pass the fountain while driving, I stop and sit there admiring the statue while the lights are still red. Cibeles will always hold a special place in Ramos’ and everyone else’s hearts who is connected to Real Madrid. They’ll assemble there now to celebrate another trophy one day, when it’s once again secure to do so.
