Juventus Stadium is an all-seater football stadium in the Vallette neighbourhood of Turin, Italy, as well as the home of Juventus F.C. The largest and most prosperous team in Italy, Juventus, moved into a new stadium more quickly than others. Between 1990 to 2006, Juventus played at the Stadio delle Alpi, which could hold 69,000 spectators, and then from 2006 to 2011 at the Stadio Olimpico, which could hold 30,000. The Stadio delle Alpi was demolished to make way for the Juventus Stadium, known today as the Allianz Stadium, which Juventus moved into in 2011.
Juve decided against replicating the 70,000-seater delle Alpi for their new stadium after only drawing an average of 36,000 spectators each game there for 16 years. Instead, they constructed a significantly smaller arena with a seating capacity of just 41,000 instead.
The reasoning was rather straightforward, in fact. In Italy, there are several deteriorating concrete bowls with sports tracks surrounding them that are rarely filled on weekends, if at all. Juve desired a fully occupied, more contemporary venue with spectators positioned near the field, more equivalent to a typical Bundesliga stadium.
It was a wise move, and it largely has paid off. The Allianz Stadium seems to be friendlier than the delle Alpi, which wasn’t a really enjoyable place to visit. It’s difficult to gaze at Juventus, a team that reportedly has 80 million fans worldwide, and not think that 41,000 is a modest number for a team of size.
Juve has dominated Italian football for the past ten years, has advanced to many Champions League finals, and had Cristiano Ronaldo on their roster, yet their venue is smaller than Sunderland’s in the third division of English football. Simply said, it seems a little off.
