Currently, in this season’s Champions League Manchester City has qualified from the Group Stages and is now moved on to the Round Of 16 Knockout Sages, facing RB Leipzig. Coming straight to the point, the bulk of the club’s supporters do not like Uefa; this is not something that just happened suddenly but rather as a result of multiple choices.
It all began when Porto’s fans racially taunted former Italian Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli during their Europa League run in 2011–12 and received a mere 20,000 euro punishment.
To a particular extent, this is true even though the Citizens were penalized 30,000 euros barely a month later for entering the field for the start of the second half of their match against Sporting Lisbon 30 seconds late.
Not only this, when they violated the Financial Fair Play Regulations, as well as squad size and transfer expenditure caps, in 2014, UEFA punished them with a £49 million punishment, which only served to further their contempt.
Later in 2014, when City supporters had reserved hotels and flights for their match against CSKA Moscow, tensions reached a height when they discovered the Russian team had been banned from stadiums.
Some Manchester City supporters still tried to enter the stadium, which is reasonable given the racial insults and behavior of their followers but was turned away while hundreds of CSKA supporters were inside, in front of UEFA representatives. It received no punishment or repercussions, but the Moscow group’s ban was lowered after an appeal.
Manchester City’s Manager Pep Guardiola has already discussed his team’s history of taunting the UEFA National Anthem and recently expressed his hope that the fans’ behavior will alter. This is the reason Why do Man City fans boo the Champions League anthem?
