Why do Liverpool fans boo the national anthem? Exact Reason Explained
Liverpool fans, often known to be the most infamous fanbase in all of UK, have a unique reason of always booing the national anthem. Most recently, they booed the national anthem during FA Community Shield final against Crystal Palace in 2025. Liverpool fans have always voiced their concerns against the hierarchy and the establishment since the 20th century.
The booing of the national anthem first took place in the 1980s, especially after the the Hillsborough disaster. Liverpool fans have never supported the hierarchy or the Royal Throne, including the King and the Queen. They also booed during King Charles III’s coronation and continue doing so during the national anthem.
Liverpool have, on the matter of national anthem, stated on record the following:
“It is, of course, a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it.”
Why Liverpool fans boo the National Anthem
Liverpool Football Club often finds itself in crosswinds when it comes to the national anthem. While they need to comply with the FA Rules, they also need to respect the feelings of the fanbase. The Premier League, categorically, have stated that it is not compulsory for football clubs to play the national anthem.
Liverpool fans from Merseyside have always been against the Class system from traditional Great Britain. They believe the hierarchy has continued to ignore the demands of the Merseyside financially. The area continues to be poorer than rest of the metropolitans in the country.
“Just don’t play it”: Many Liverpool fans have often voiced for the national anthem to not be played if they want it to be booed or disrespected. Liverpool fans have also made it clear that the system, the government and the Royal Family should look to provide more facilities to the area for its growth.
Until their demands are met, it seems highly unlikely that Liverpool fans will have any affection to the Royal Family. Poverty continues to be a major issue in the Merseyside, which we hope gets resolved soon.
