Given this, it seems sensible that Liverpool fans were devastated by his exit from the team. It didn’t make it any easier to know that Suarez had lived in Barcelona for a while and that relocating there had already been somewhat of a longtime ambition for him.

Although his departure from Barcelona in July 2014 was disheartening for then-manager Brendan Rodgers because the Reds had managed to lose a player who had nearly single-handedly won the league the season previously, it did have a significant impact on how much money the team might look to reinvest in the playing squad.

The issue was that Liverpool substituted Suarez with quantity rather than quality. It was obvious that replacing a player who had recently netted 31 goals and provided 19 assists in only 37 games would be nearly impossible, but the Reds made the incorrect decision and suffered the penalty for it for many years to come.

Rickie Lambert ($4 million), Emre Can ($10 million), Adam Lallana ($25 million), Lazar Markovic ($20 million), Dejan Lovren ($20 million), Divock Origi ($10 million), Javier Manquillo ($12 million), Alberto Moreno ($12 million), and Mario Balotelli ($16 million) were all purchased by Liverpool for a combined $117 million.

At the time, it was bad business to spend £16 million on Balotelli. The Italian was never going to fill the gap left by Suarez, despite the fact that Suarez had netted 18 goals in 41 appearances for AC Milan the year before moving to Anfield.

To put it mildly, the season after Suarez was lacklustre. The Reds placed sixth overall, advanced to the FA Cup and League Cup semifinals, but were eliminated from the Champions League in the group phase and the Europa League in the round of 32.

After the 2015–16 season, Rodgers was fired by Liverpool as a result of their sluggish investment, which finally led to the termination of his position.

Suarez’s 2014 sale to Barcelona was difficult to swallow, but it did push Liverpool to reevaluate their whole transfer strategy following their £117 million blunder. The Merseyside red men haven’t turned back since making that strategic shift.

Following recently, the Merseyside has signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica and can he be Liverpool’s next Luis Suarez?
