Who Will Win The Premier League This Season? Preview

As they typically are, Man City, the reigning champions, were the overwhelming favourites before going into the season. But indications point to a far tougher challenge for them to hold onto the crown this time. Two points behind the early leaders, Pep Guardiola’s team is in second place after 20 games.

After winning nine and losing two of their first eleven games, Man City dropped points during a difficult stretch by drawing with Tottenham, Chelsea, and Liverpool before losing to Aston Villa. They managed to bounce back and defeat relegation-threatened Luton with a late comeback, but in stoppage time they lost two points at home to Crystal Palace.

Man City has won three games in a row since winning the global title, and they have put themselves back on track with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle. With their disappointments from the previous season well behind them, Liverpool led the league going into 2024 and currently lead second-place Man City by two points.

Along with their 14 victories in the Premier League thus far this season, the Reds have only lost one, to Tottenham Hotspur in a contentious match. Jurgen Klopp’s team has won nine of their last 14 games and drawn with Brighton, Luton, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal since that setback.

With their 4-2 triumph over Newcastle on New Year’s Day, Liverpool had won three straight after two draws. For a while, it appeared as though Arsenal, the almost team of the 2022–2023 season, would be breaking their lengthy trophy drought in the Premier League, their first since the 2003–04 Invincibles season. However, Mikel Arteta’s team had to make do with second place. Arsenal is proving they are here to stay, despite the opinions of some who thought their season-ending losses to West Ham and Fulham were an exception. They have lost four of their last ten Premier League games, but they triumphed over Crystal Palace 5-0 to go back on track.

Notwithstanding Harry Kane’s challenge against Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot, Tottenham had a dismal 2022–2023 season. An agonising 29 points separated Spurs from winner Man City in seventh place, and head coach Antonio Conte resigned before the season was over.

There was some early doubt about Ange Postecoglou’s ability when the former Celtic manager was appointed in the summer. Nevertheless, despite starting each game in the front, Tottenham’s five-game winning streak ended with just one point, negating the fantastic start the Australian had in the dugout.

Tottenham, however, snapped out of that losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Newcastle, and they followed it up with four more victories from their following five games. In their most recent match, Tottenham twice overcame a deficit to draw 2-2 at Manchester United.

It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that Aston Villa is currently one of the championship favourites under Unai Emery’s excellent leadership. Ultimately, the Villans trail leaders Liverpool by just three points, sitting in third place. They are unbeaten in their previous 17 league games at Villa Park, boast the joint-second-best offence, and have won the most games in the Premier League this season.

Last week, Aston Villa had a great home week, defeating Manchester City and Arsenal 1-0. Despite leading 2-0 at the interval, they lost 3-2 to Manchester United, and to end the year, they defeated Burnley by the same score thanks to a late penalty. Only a gruelling 0-0 draw away to Everton marked Villa’s first league result of 2024.
