The competition involves 16 teams, and Spain’s U-21 squad has won five UEFA Euro U-21 championships, making them one of the top favourites to win. The event is set to be one of the most competitive in recent years, with scores of rising talents hoping to make an impression ahead of the 2023/24 domestic season.
The Young Three Lions have qualified for the eighth final event in a row, all since the move to odd-numbered years in 2007. They enjoyed a superb record until a 2-1 home loss to Slovenia in the final game of their group on June 13, 2022, which broke England’s record 54-game unbeaten streak in Euro U-21 qualification dating back to November 14, 2011.
Lee Carsley’s Lions are loaded with potential, but it will be up to the players to gel well enough to launch a sustained title challenge. Oliver Skipp, Curtis Jones, and Jacob Ramsey have all played consistently for Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Aston Villa, respectively. That three forms a highly capable and threatening midfield with lots of Premier League experience. Morgan Gibbs-White, Anthony Gordon, and Emile Smith Rowe will all be aiming to shine, with the three forming a fairly talented, creative, and quick attack, not to mention Noni Madueke.
The youthful Spaniards finished their group impressively, nine points ahead of runners-up Slovakia, and have already qualified for the knockout stages, level on points with Ukraine. Spain, the tournament’s five-time champion, is the clear favourites, and for good reason.
With Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga, Santi Denia has one of the most potential No. 8s in the game right now. In 2022-23, only two U-21 midfielders scored 10 or more league goals in a top-five European league, and Veiga was one of them. La Rojita may also rely on Rodrigo Riquelme and Sergio Gomez, both of whom are formidable players in their own right.
This Spanish club appears to be a classic side that is presently playing some fluid football in the knockout rounds and will undoubtedly be one of the teams to watch in the tournament. Ukraine has been one of the most consistent teams in the competition, and they have a powerful defence commanded by Ilya Zabarnyi.
They are also dangerous moving forward, with Vladyslav Supriaha and Mykhailo Mudryk both capable of scoring. Israel has been one of the tournament’s most outstanding sides, scoring 12 goals in five matches. They have a formidable assault led by Oscar Gloukh and Liel Abada, as well as a good defence.
We believe that Spain U-21 or England U-21 are the overwhelming favourites to win the U-21 European Trophy, although Ukraine U-21 and Israel U-21 might also fancy their chances going into the semi-finals. Only time will tell which U-21 nation takes home the European U-21 Championship.
