Who Will Win The AFCON 2024? Preview
The most prestigious football competition on the African continent is the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is in charge of organizing the tournament, and all 54 of its member nations are welcome to compete.
But only 24 nations—out of the 54—will advance to the competition following a qualifying stage. Sudan hosted the inaugural AFCON in 1957, with participation from Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. Egypt is the nation with the most titles, having won the inaugural event and adding another seven to their tally.
The 34th edition of the competition will take place in Ivory Coast in 2023–2024. It is held every two years. Since its founding, only 14 nations have been able to claim the title, though. We predict that Senegal, Morocco, Egypt and Nigeria are the biggest favourites to win this year’s AFCON Tournament.
The current winners and one of the strongest teams, Senegal, want to keep the trophy. They have won three of their four group-stage matches against Guinea (0–2), Cameroon (3–1), and Gambia (3-0), demonstrating their impressive start to the competition.
The Lions of Teranga are the overwhelming favourites to advance when they play the hosts, Ivory Coast, in the round of 16. Morocco is advancing through the AFCON campaign with ease, while their competitors in North Africa are facing difficulties.
The 2022 World Cup semifinalists defeated Tanzania 3-0 with great ease, but unexpectedly tied 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After defeating Zambia 1-0 to end the group stage, they will play South Africa in the round of 16.
The Pharaohs of Egypt, the most successful team in AFCON history, had a difficult start to Group B, drawing all three of their matches against opponents who looked to be below par. They are favourites against DR Congo going into the round of 16.
Nigeria has won three titles in the African Cup of Nations, giving them a rich history in the competition. The national squad has benefited recently from the contributions of players like Victor Osimhen. The Super Eagles’ victories over the host nation, Ivory Coast (1-0), and Guinea-Bissau (1-0), together with their draw against Equatorial Guinea (1-1), put them up for a matchup with Cameroon in the round of 16.
