Ballon D’Or, handed out by the France football magazine, is widely regarded as the biggest, most prized individual award a footballer can win in his career. Earlier, the award was restricted to only players of European nationality, preventing legends like Diego Maradona and Pele from ever winning it. But later, it was extended to include every player playing in Europe.
Here, we look at who will win Ballon D’Or 2021, and who stands the best chance of going all the way as we approach the ceremony that takes place on 29th November 2021.
Who Will Win Ballon d’Or 2021? Lionel Messi vs Robert Lewandowski
These two players are arguably the best players in the past 12 months and it has expectedly come down to them. Lionel Messi shone for Barcelona and Argentina, finally winning the Copa America earlier this summer. As for Lewandowski, he was scoring at a scary rate for Bayern Munich all year long.
Messi’s chances, according to bookmakers, is 1/2, while the Polish striker is close behind at 3/1. Messi already holds the record for the most Ballon d’Ors with 6, and if he wins this one, he will extend that tally to 7. Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t a big contender for this award this time considering the drop in form, but he is 36, after all.
Mo Salah and the best of the rest- Who Will Win Ballon d’Or 2021?
Mohamed Salah is one that might miss out on this award despite deserving to win it. The Egyptian superstar plays in the toughest league in the world and was the single force behind Liverpool’s unbelievable third-placed finish last season. He missed on the PL golden by just one goal.
This season, he has set the game alight with goals and assists by the bundle. 17 G/A in 12 games is no joke and it’s a shame that the former Chelsea and AS Roma man really deserves to be at least a top 2 for this award. One underserving candidate that has somehow made his way to the top 3 contenders is Jorginho.
The docile midfielder just has the good luck of winning the UEFA Euros and the UEFA Champions League. With no real tangible contribution in winning either trophies, one would be right to assume that the voters are not swayed by media and the hype, and choose an actually deserving winner.
