Manchester City have one of the most talented squads in the world football. Ranging from the likes of Kevin de Bruyne to Ruben Dias, they have quality scattered all across the pitch. But one thing that they lack is the presence of a clear, out and out leader.
That has been absent ever since Vincent Kompany left for Belgium. And with a lack of a leadership, the club also lacks a clear, designated penalty shooter. Here, Alley Sport lists out all their potential penalty takers to help you with your FPL team.
Who takes Man City penalties?
Riyad Mahrez takes Manchester City’s penalties currently. But the situation is more complicated than that and needs further analysis considering Raheem Sterling is also in the picture. The reason why it is clear that the two of them are City’s preferred takers is because they have taken all of Man City’s penalties in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League this season.
Surprisingly, Kevin de Bruyne is yet to take a spot kick so far in both the competitions. Mahrez has taken 4 out of 6 penalties awarded to Man City in the PL and UCL so far, and has scored all four. But Sterling has taken 2 pens, both in the league, and scored both.
So, who takes Man City penalties- Mahrez, Sterling, or someone else?
But it is important to note that Sterling’s penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers came when Mahrez was on the bench. The Englishman’s second penalty, which came against Leicester City in a 6-3 pasting of Brendan Rodgers’ side, was also scored by him after Mahrez had already taken one in the match.
So, it is clear that Mahrez will take penalties for Man City whenever he is on the pitch, unless he is feeling charitable after already scoring once in the game. Now you know who to spend the big bucks on in FPL. Phil Foden, meanwhile, is the only Citizen to miss a penalty this season, which he did against West Ham United in a Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out.
