Who is the King of football in 2022?
A new year is upon us. And with it, we have the evergreen debate of who is the king of football in 2022. 2021 was arguably Lionel Messi’s year, as the Argentine legend won his 7th Ballon d’Or title. But Robert Lewandowski wasn’t far behind.
This year, we have some of the same older contenders, but a few new entrants as well. Here, we take a glance at 4 contenders to be called the ultimate king of football in 2022.
Who is the King of football in 2022?
LIONEL MESSI- PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
There is no year in football since 2006 that Lionel Messi hasn’t been in the ‘best player in the world’ debate. The Argentine legend has made a big name for himself by winning 7 Ballon d’Ors and finally won an international trophy in the past year with Argentina.
A career that has seen him lift several trophies at Barcelona, he has taken over a new journey in Paris. He hasn’t had a strong end to the year but he remains a big contender to be the king of football this year. With 678 goals and 409 assists in 802 matches across his club career, the 34-year-old remains the GOAT.
ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI- BAYERN MUNICH
The German hitman ripped apart the Bundesliga in the past calendar year. He finished as the league’s top scorer last season and leads the scoring charts again going into the year. If it wasn’t for the veteran Polish striker, this spot would have gone to Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund.
He is arguably in the twilight years of his career so 2022 could well be the last truly top year he enjoys in European football.
MOHAMED SALAH- LIVERPOOL
Mohamed Salah cannot brag of the numbers that Messi or Lewandowski have produced over the years. But the Egyptian superstar firstly plays as a winger, and secondly, plays in the most competitive league in the world. He was Liverpool’s top scorer last season as they heroically finished third to qualify for UCL football.
This season, he is the league’s top scorer with 15 goals already. He is killing it in the UEFA Champions League as well and it is clear that he is the main man- the face of the best league in the world.
CRISTIANO RONALDO- MANCHESTER UNITED
The Portugal legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, is one of the top goalscorers in the history of the sport. The legendary striker has scored goals at Real Madrid, Sporting CP, Juventus, Portugal national team, and Manchester United- basically wherever he has gone. His trophy cabinet is laden with UCL titles and Ballon d’Ors.
This season, he already has 14 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils despite them struggling over the course of the season. But the 36-year-old has lost a lot of his old magic, evident by his shift in position from winger to striker. Still, he remains at the top of the game but for us, the king of football going into 2022 would be Lionel Messi.
