A 5’7 beast from Secunderabad, Sunil Chettri has managed 121 appearances for India, scoring 76 goals in the process. He is the 2nd highest goal scorers for active international players, just behind the talismanic Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo. Son of an Indian Army officer, Sunil Chhetri had football in his blood, with his father playing football for the Indian Army football team, while his mother and twin sisters represented the Nepal Football team.
Making his debut in 2004, Sunil Chhetri had represented India U-20 against Pakistan U-23. He scored his first goals for the Indian U-20 side in a 4-1 victory against Bhutan U-23, making a strong mark on the Indian football scene. In June 2005, he scored his first goal for the senior side against Pakistan. In 2012, he was named the captain for the India side for the AFC Challenge Cup in Malaysia, a pure successor to the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia.
Sunil Chhetri continues to lead the Indian side for a term of over 9 years. He represents the Bangalore based team in the Indian Super League. He has amassed a total of 111 club goals in 226 appearances in the domestic league, while also stamping his mark in the continent scoring 20 goals in Asian club football. He had stints with big clubs like Sporting Lisbon of Portugal as well as Kansas City Wizards based in the USA, but his priority always lies in making India a global footballing powerhouses- a true captain.
