Who is the best goalkeeper in the world 2021- and who can expect to be top the list in 2022?

Goalkeepers are often the most underrated players on the pitch. You can make 10s of saves but people just to tend to remember that one error you made during the game. It’s just the opposite of what it is for forwards. You can have a poor game for 90 minutes but even one tap in from 2 yards out chalks it down as a great game for the goalscorer.

So, which goalkeepers have stood the test of criticisms, inconsistency, and double standards that are inherent with the position of being a goalkeeper? We take a look.

There are a few names that come to mind when we ask this question. Firstly, it is important to set out the criterion for such a list. Does it relate to overall ability, awards, or just a very good calendar year? We will consider a mix of it all, because we will aim to be as unbiased as possible.

Edouard Mendy (#5)

The Senegal international features on our list at number 5. The Chelsea goalkeeper has had an incredible year for the Blues. He is definitely not extraordinary at any one aspect of goalkeeping but he is certainly one of the least error-prone goalkeepers recently. It is a surprise he was left off the Ballon d’Or rankings because he truly is a top goalkeeper that deserved more respect for his contributions to Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League title win earlier this year.

Ederson Moraes (#4)

The Manchester City goalkeeper is certainly one of the best passers and dribblers of the ball we have ever seen don a goalkeeper’s jersey. An international for Brazil, the 28-year-old is at the peak of his powers for City and is a very crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s system. He is truly the first line of his possession-centred style of football and his range of passing, coupled with his safe hands between the posts, make him an invaluable asset.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (#3)

The Italian international was the hero for Italy at the UEFA Euros this summer. His penalty heroics won his team the trophy and the 22-year-old is only getting started. A tall player coupled with great agility, he is hard to beat in the goal. But his move from AC Milan to PSG has seen him being benched for Keylor Navas more often than not, and until he can reclaim that #1 spot, he cannot become one of the best goalkeepers in the world in 2022 despite winning the UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2021.

Alisson Becker (#2)

The Brazil international is doing wonders at Liverpool. Before him, the Reds were lost and were struggling in the goalkeeper department. But now, he has made that position his own. The sum they paid for him looks like a bargain, and Alisson is arguably the most complete goalkeeper in the world at the moment.

Jan Oblak (#1)

He won La Liga with Atletico Madrid this summer, and the Slovenian is a big reason why Diego Simeone’s men are so tight at the back. Tall, agile, and as fast as a cat, it takes a lot to beat Oblak in goal. He rarely ever makes a mistake and has one of the safest hands in world football. His distribution can use some improvement but he absolutely excels at the basics of being a world-class goalkeeper.
