Who is Ian Maatsen of Chelsea and Coventry City?
Chelsea have a number of players loaned out to several clubs. Conor Gallagher, Billy Gilmour, Armando Broja, and Emerson Palmieri are just some of the examples. But there is a new kid on the block in the form of a teenage left-back. So, who is Ian Maatsen? And can Chelsea recall him in the January transfer window?

Ian Maatsen is a 19-year-old left-back who plays for Coventry City on loan from Chelsea. Born in Vlaardingen in the Netherlands on March 10, 2002, Maatsen made a name for himself at Cobham. But his roots lie in Holland.
The youngster is a product of the Feyenoord academy before he joined Sparta Rotterdam’s set-up as an 11-year-old. From there, PSV Eindhoven came calling before Chelsea snapped him up in 2018. He played extensively for the U23 team and the U18 team for the West London club.
However, he has no appearances for the senior team. He has, however, enjoyed senior football on loan spells with Charlton Athletic and now, Coventry City, in the EFL Championship. He is a very important part of Mark Robins set-up.
Will Chelsea recall Ian Maatsen and Emerson Palmieri from loan after Ben Chilwell surgery?
Robins has previously hinted that Chelsea do not have an option in Maatsen’s contract to call him back mid-season. He said last month:
“But from my perspective there’s no concern about that. There’s no point in being concerned. I have not heard anything to the contrary. He’s with us for the season and hopefully that remains the case because I think he’s getting a really good and grounded experience both here and with the Netherlands.”
Fabrizio Romano, however, has clarified that Chelsea could recall Maatsen or Emerson Palmieri as Plan B if they fail to sign players like Lucas Digne and Sergino Dest. Palmieri is on a loan spell at Lyon in Ligue 1. Ben Chilwell will go undergo surgery that rules him out for the season.
So it is obvious that Thomas Tuchel will have a transfer plan in place. Whether that includes recalling Maatsen from his loan spell remains to be seen.
