There are players from every corner of the world to have won the English top division, widely regarded as the most competitive and prestigious first division title in the world, but who are the Italians to win the Premier League? Italians to win the Premier League- just the one player?
Surprisingly, in the entire history of the English top-flight and the Premier League’s inauguration since 1992, only one player from Italy has won the Premier League title- Mario Balotelli, doing so with Manchester City under Roberto Mancini in the epic 2011/12 PL season.
The much-maligned Italian striker made a name for himself in City’s attack alongside Sergio Aguero, Stevan Jovetic, and Edin Dzeko. In fact, it was Balotelli whose sole assist that season, a 94th-minute pass to Aguero, was the reason Man City lifted the Premier League title. It didn’t really work out for the Italian at City after that.
Moves to Liverpool, AC Milan, and OGC Nice amongst several clubs followed. But it is surprising that the Italian striker, who took the UEFA Euro 2012 by storm all by himself, is the only player from such a football-crazy nation to lift the PL title in history.
Italians to win the Premier League- who else got close?
It is very peculiar to think that Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini, two Italians, have won the Premier League, along with Claudio Ranieri. But only one of them had an Italian in their team. Conte actually saw Marco Amelia, a third-choice goalkeeper, leave for Vicenza in the 2016/17 season, when he won the league with the Blues.
Right now, Chelsea have Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri as two Italians in the Premier League who can add their name to the list. But it still remains an amazing fact that after all these years, a country with so much success in the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euros, has only provided England with one PL winner.
