In the year 1888, the world’s original football league was formed at the Royal Hotel in Manchester. After 133 years of existence, the English football league has provided countless moments, which are embedded in the history of football. The English football hierarchy puts Premier League at the top tier, as the Premier League is also widely as one of the most competitive sports leagues in the world.
Who Are The Founding Members of Football League?
As per the EFL website, “The twelve founder members of the Football League are Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke (as they were known at the time), West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.” Preston North End were the first winners of the Football League in 1889, as the league now faces an entirely new lot of dominance by clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United to name a few.
The era of the Premier League
The Premier League was founded on 27th May, 1992 as the FA Premier League, consisting of 20 clubs competing on a promotion/relegation system. The clubs in the Football League decided to make a move away from the original league and make a more commercially viable tournament in the FA Premier League, with high TV money involved from Sky Sports. The English Premier League is the most-watched sports league globally, broadcasted in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.
