The most common reason for teams to do business in the January window is when a player of their squad has an injury that will keep them out for an extended period of time. Some clubs may try to locate a replacement for a player who gets injured in November and is projected to be out for two to three months during the January window, despite the fact that there are significantly fewer players available on the market during the winter window.

Some clubs may want to tweak their squads but most of the top coaches prefer not to reinforce their team during the January window. Unless it is absolutely necessary, they see no need to bring in a player who is completely new to the squad, midway through the season when they don’t have time to get fully settled in or in some cases, up to pace.

Big-name moves are more common in the summer, however there are exceptions: some players have disagreements with coaching staff or teammates and submit a transfer request, which their clubs might accept or reject.

There have been a few instances in recent seasons where top players have returned to another club during the winter transfer window, such as Philippe Coutinho’s transition from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018. That transaction had clearly been in the works for some time, as it was revealed on January 6th, and Liverpool had accepted terms with Southampton for Virgil van Dijk less than a fortnight before, knowing that they would be able to pay the cost because they were guaranteed 160 million euros after the sale of Phillipe Coutinho.
