Chelsea have become one of the top football clubs in the world in the past two decades. Ever since Roman Abramovich bought ownership, the Blues have become one of the best clubs in Europe, let alone London. That is a far cry from the 1970s and 1980s when they were largely a forgettable side.
And it’s not a surprise that like most clubs, they have had to battle relegation. So, when was the last time Chelsea faced relegation?
When were Chelsea last relegated?
Chelsea were last relegated in the 1987-88 season of division 1. The league had 21 teams back then, and Chelsea finished 18th. Instead of being directly relegated, they went to relegation play-offs but lost in the semi-final of it to Blackburn Rovers.
They won division two the very next year and came back to the first division and since then, have never been relegated. The first division was rebranded as the Premier League in 1992 and Chelsea have always been top dogs during that time, especially after 2003 when Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovich, purchased them.
How many times have Chelsea been relegated?
Chelsea have been relegated a total of six times, with the first one being in the 1909/10 season under Jimmy Windridge. Gordon Durie was their boss when they were last relegated some 34 years ago. This is one thing they need not worry about anymore.
Now under Thomas Tuchel and with a team that boasts of world-class superstars, Chelsea are nowhere near relegation fights. Things change quickly in football, however, and the examples of Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United remind us to not take our football team’s good times for granted.
