What happened to Steven Gerrard and why was he not at the game between Aston Villa and Chelsea?

Steven Gerrard is one of the most influential figures in football right now. The Liverpool legend achieved a lot with his boyhood club before donning the managerial suit for Rangers and now, Aston Villa, and for both teams, he has done well.

He led Rangers to their first league title after they went into administration while he has made Villa a force to reckon with once again. So, it is understandable that fans wondered what happened to Steven Gerrard when he was not at the game between Aston Villa and Chelsea yesterday.

Like many players and staff members in the past few weeks in England, Steven Gerrard contracted Covid-19 and was self-isolating when Aston Villa played against Chelsea on Sunday. Instead of him, former Premier League midfielder Gary McAllister took the helm instead of Gerrard.

Gerrard tested positive recently and will be out for a few more days. His involvement against Brentford on 2nd January 2022 will be touch and go, but it is likely he will also miss that game. The game against Leeds United was postponed, which was originally scheduled for 28th December, due to Covid cases in the Leeds team.

What happened to Steven Gerrard and when will the Aston Villa manager be back?

The Omicron variant is clearly spreading at a faster rate but 10 days of self isolation has been recommended by the Premier League if someone tests positive for it. There are no changes in rules on that front. So, Gerrard’s return date, to be exact, can be the FA Cup 3rd Round clash against Manchester United on January 11.

He may not be fit for the game against Brentford because it comes too early for him. The 10 days of self isolation may rule out for the match against Thomas Frank’s Bees. Hopefully, he is back soon because 11th-placed Aston Villa can really use his help.
