UEFA Player of the year award 20/21 : De Bruyne, Jorginho and Kante make top 3

The UEFA Player of the award 20/21 will be awarded to the best player on the continent for the past calendar year. The award is usually handed out in late September/early October and has been in the hands of some of the best players in the history of the game.

The award was first handed out in 2010 and was won by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who is, of course, now in PSG. As for the latest winner of the award, it was Rober Lewandowski last year. Messi has won the awards twice while Ronaldo holds the record for the most wins with three.

This year’s three-man shortlist has now been revealed by UEFA and the list is filled with the usual suspects. The voting was open to coaches and other reputed journalists and the long list has now been narrowed down to just three names.

These are: Kevin de Druyne of Manchester City, N’Golo Kante of Chelsea, and Jorginho, again, from Chelsea. The three midfielders lit the UEFA club and national team competitions in the past 12 months and are the three most-voted players in the list of nominees for best men’s player of the year.

Who will win the UEFA Player of the Year award 20/21?

de Bruyne reached the final of the UEFA Champions League this summer. The UCL is a big criterion in determining the award’s winner considering it is the organization’s premier sporting competition in the calendar year. And the team that de Bruyne’s City lost to was Chelsea.

The Blues, with Kante and Jorginho in their midfield, defied expectations and beat Pep Guardiola’s City by a surprise 1-0 scoreline. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game but it was Chelsea’s solidity in midfield that kept them in control of the game for the entire 90 minutes.

One would argue that Messi should have been on the shortlist as well. But unfortunately, the UEFA Player of the Year award 20/21 could be biased that way considering the Argentine did not lead his Barcelona side to the deep waters in UCL and while he won the Copa America, it is a competition treated in inferior light when compared to UEFA Euros.

The worthy winner of the three, in our opinion, is de Bruyne, because of his mesmeric ability on the ball and how he is the main man for Belgium and Man City. Kante’s solidity and work rate are good but he is often found in monotonous roles throughout games, one that fails to capture the eye. Jorginho has had his stocks raised for some reason despite no tangible contribution in Chelsea or Italy’s success.
