UCL Round Of 16 Predictions: Which Teams Are Most Likely To Qualify To The Next Round
Before the first round of the knockout round begins, all 16 teams have been paired with their respective opponents in the Champions League round of 16, which won’t take place until February. We at Alley Sport are here to cover UCL Round Of 16 Predictions. Round of 16 pairings were announced, completing the road to the London final of the 2023–24 Champions League.
UCL Round Of 16 Predictions & Preview
The Gunners quickly made their imprint on the Champions League after a six-year absence, following their assault for the Premier League championship last year. PSV Eindhoven, Sevilla, Lens, who finished one point shy of the Ligue 1 title, and Arsenal all won a deceptively difficult group without ever conceding a goal at home.
Although Porto’s record against Barcelona may have made the Portuguese team seem like a nice draw to Arsenal supporters, the Portuguese team nonetheless made a strong impression by placing second in the group. The Gunners will be most concerned about Porto’s offence, which is spearheaded by four-goal scorer Galeno (who also has four assists) and Evanilson. In this one, prepare for some pyrotechnics. We believe Arsenal will advance.
What is expected to be the most intense Round of 16 encounters between the Serie A champions against the La Liga winners in what has been dubbed the Maradona derby. Barça, which barely defeated Porto in their group, will be without their star player, Gavi. Read till the end to find the UCL Round Of 16 Predictions.
If it can gain a draw with Napoli, it will need to pray that its success in La Liga does not translate to Europe. Following manager Luciano Spalletti’s departure (who subsequently took a job coaching Italy), Napoli, who had won the Scudetto for the first time in thirty years, had trouble continuing their form.
Even though Napoli is currently in ninth position and would not be able to qualify for the Champions League the following year, it has proceeded to the knockout stages and has fallen twice to Real Madrid. It barely has a chance without Victor Osimhen putting forth his best effort. We predict Barcelona will make more progress.
A little Basque team with just four Champions League outings under its belt would have seemed unlikely to be included in the opening Round of 16 encounters. Real Sociedad’s feat of winning the group undefeated and surrendering just twice while going to the knockout stage is even more astonishing.
As for PSG, it was one of the favourites in the Champions League going into the season, but it only finished tied for second in the group and made it through only to a better goal difference over AC Milan. Real Sociedad surrendered the fewest goals—including none on the road—across the group stage of the Champions League, so Kylian Mbappé and company will now need to step up their defence. PSG will proceed, in our opinion.
Diego Simeone’s tenure at Atlético Madrid seemed to be coming to an end following the team’s humiliating last-place result in the 2022–23 group stage. He only needed to guide Los Colchoneros to an undefeated first-place finish and a brilliant start to this year’s Champions League group stage to solidify his dynasty.
Antoine Greizmann, who co-tops the Champions League goalscoring statistics with five goals, had a comeback that was largely responsible for Simeone’s rejuvenation. Inter Milan struggled in the group stage, with just three victories and three draws, after qualifying for the Champions League final the previous season, partly due to an easy draw.
This year, starting with Atlético, the Italian team’s path to the championship will be much more challenging. We believe it will be a tough battle but in the end, Athletico Madrid will advance further. Borussia Dortmund emerged victorious from a Group of Death that included PSG, AC Milan, and Newcastle, surprising many who had predicted them to finish last in the group. Even more astounding is the fact that Dortmund let up just four goals to those well-known assaults in six games. However, Karim Adebayi, who scored two goals and provided an assist and was the quickest player in the group stage, suffered an injury recently, adding to Dortmund’s fitness issues.
For supporters of the U.S. men’s national team, Malik Tillman, Sergiño Dest, and Ricardo Pepi are all anticipated to contribute to this match. Borussia Dortmund is expected to proceed further. In the group stage, Bayern Munich has performed as expected, going undefeated against FC Copenhagen, Manchester United, and Galatasaray.
Its shocking gaffe was a scoreless draw against Copenhagen, but the German champion’s 4-3 victory over United provided us with the greatest group-stage encounter. With three goals in the group stage for Bayern, Lazio’s strategy will undoubtedly be aimed at Harry Kane.
With only seven goals in six games, Maurizio Sarri’s team found it difficult to score in the group stage; yet, Lazio kept three clean sheets. Anticipate a very defensive approach in the opening leg at the Stadio Olimpico. Bayern Munich easily advances.
While there is no rule stating that the team defending their championship must get the easiest opponents, that is how things transpired this year. Only once, in the Round of 16 in 2010–11, has FC Copenhagen advanced to the next round. The Danish team, however, will not be taken lightly following their group stage victory over Bayern Munich, Manchester United, and Galatasaray.
However, Manchester City is the front-runner once again, having broken free from its Champions League curse last season. Since City dropped three goals in each of its six games and that co-leading scorer in the Champions League, Erling Haaland, scored five goals, more goals than any other team during the group stage. With ease, Manchester City will advance.
Real Madrid made a stunning comeback with a spotless group stage record, winning all six of its games, after their semifinal Champions League matchup with Man City last season. Jude Bellingham’s four goals (the English midfielder also leads La Liga with 13 goals) helped Los Blancos score goals even though they lost Benzema during the transfer window.
However, Real’s injury issues will be its vulnerability. Along with Thibaut Courtois and Éder Militão, David Alaba became the third Real starter to suffer a season-ending knee injury this year. Carlo Ancelotti’s first major test as he tries to strengthen major Madrid’s defence will come against RB Leipzig and star attacker Loïs Openda after Man City emerged victorious in their group. We belive Real Madrid will move forward.
