When was the last time Arsenal was in the Champions League?- The top 4 drought continues
Arsenal were a Champions League regular under Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman never really won the UCL with Arsenal, but he made them a regular team in the UCL group stages. He also once said that the top 4 is a trophy and was criticized by the Gunners fans during that time.
But with time, they have realized how correct he was and how difficult it is to make the top four again. Wenger isn’t Arsenal manager anymore, and with him, went away Arsenal’s chances of making the top four again. Mikel Arteta doesn’t look like the man to take them there despite their run this season. But for now, we focus on when was the last time Arsenal qualified for the UCL.
When was the last time Arsenal was in the Champions League?
2016-17 was the last season that Arsenal were in the Champions League. To put things into context, Wenger was still there manager and Alexis Sanchez was their top scorer that season with 30 goals. From there on in, they haven’t made the UCL and look unlikely to crack it again.

Their last UCL tie was against Bayern Munich during that season itself, where they lost 10-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. Perhaps that was a really strong signal of things to come in their future. Since then, they have made the UEFA Europa League every single season apart from the last season. They even made the final in 2019 but lost to Chelsea.
Can Arsenal qualify for the UCL this season?
Arsenal are actually in a strong position on the league table right now. They beat Leeds United comprehensively yesterday without the leadership of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and were a really dominant force on the pitch. They have put the midtable teams to the sword so far but massively failed against the big boys in head-to-head fixtures.
Arteta’s men are currently fourth on the table with 32 points from 18 games, which is four more than 5th-placed West Ham United, who have a game in hand. A lot of the teams have had their games postponed during this time and Arsenal have made the most of the disruption to claw back to the UCL spots.

But they don’t have enough to last the distance. Their team is an embarrassment on the field in big games and when they start to drop points, they do so in abundance. Their fall is just around the corner a team with a better manager, such as Antonio Conte for Tottenham Hotspur, would rather make the top 4.
