Premier League, true to its name, houses the very best English clubs in the land in the space of that 9-month-long season. But at times, there are teams that are in the mix which really look out of place. Just think of Southampton who lost 9-0 on two occasions in the space of just a few years.
So, which team has the biggest defeat in Premier League history? And what is Leeds United biggest defeat in their entire top-flight, or second/third-tier footballing history? Alley Sport helps you find out.
Which team has the biggest defeat in Premier League history?
The biggest defeat in Premier League history actually applies to two teams, but we rank Leicester City at the top because of the fact that they achieved their 9-0 triumph over Southampton away from their home ground. This result came after Ryan Bertrand, Southampton’s left-back, was sent off after just 12 minutes.

Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez netted hat-tricks in this win during the game that took place in October 2019 at St. Mary’s. Following Leicester were Man United, who beat Southampton once again, but in the comfort of their own home, with a 9-0 win at Old Trafford in February 2021.
Defender Jankewitz was sent off very early on in the game and there were several different scorers, with Anthony Martial being the only one to grab a brace.
Was 7-0 vs Man City Leeds United’s biggest defeat ever?
Actually, United’s win against Southampton wasn’t the first time a team won 9-0 at home in the PL. They achieved that feat 16 years ago against Ipswich Town in March 1995. Andy Cole scored 5 goals that day as Ipswich were all but confirmed to be relegated, with United going for the title.
As for Leeds United, this is their worst Premier League defeat to date. They have never lost by a worse scoreline than the 7-0 thrashing they were handed by Pep Guardiola’s City. Surprisingly, no Leeds player was sent off here. Phil Foden and Kevin de Bruyne grabbed braces and this was the second 7-0 result this season after Chelsea smacked Norwich City by a similar scoreline earlier during the campaign, courtesy of a Mason Mount hat-trick.
