Should Mauricio Pochettino have Rejoined Tottenham? Preview

The man who served as the Tottenham Manager from 2014 to 2019 and took Tottenham to a Champions League Final was sacked to bring in new management and win some silverware. Mauricio Pochettino has cemented himself as a Tottenham Legend for serving the club for 5 straight years.

However, it would be insulting enough if Pochettino, who was once one of Spurs’ beloved sons, joined a fierce rival while the club was thriving; however, they are now without a permanent manager of their own, and the Argentine seemed open to an emotional comeback.

To retain the club’s most illustrious manager from the Premier League era, Daniel Levy chose not to pursue the idea. Even though the pair remained in contact after Pochettino’s dismissal in 2019, the Spurs chairman allegedly went so far as to “put out feelers” on the potential of bringing the 51-year-old back.

Levy and Pochettino briefly discussed a reunion in 2021, but the latter was committed to Paris Saint-Germain and still pursuing a position at Real Madrid at the time. Nuno Espirito Santo was hired by Spurs as a result of it all being for nought.

Pochettino was a strong match for Spurs back then, and he still appears to be one today, at least on paper: a name with big-club expertise and a reputation for playing attractive football, both at home coaching established stars and grooming new players. The 2023 version, according to sources close to the chairman, does not satisfy Levy’s criteria for a new coach in the mould of Pochettino in 2014—young, ambitious, and up-and-coming.

Pochettino has over ten years more experience, is older, and is unquestionably a different coach now. Although Pochettino has many evident strengths, Levy may argue that going back seldom succeeds in football, which is perhaps more pertinent.

Levy, according to sources, does not want to be too affected by emotion, and there are worries within the club over Pochettino’s final season in charge, when results were poor and the environment worsened. The apparent counterargument is that Spurs nevertheless made it to a historic Champions League final in his last 12 months and that the club’s actions and the issues the manager had foreseen—specifically, the inability to restock the squad—were primarily to blame for the decline in the club’s spirit and football performance.

Even if Levy had been persuaded, the Spurs management was split on the benefits of Pochettino returning, and he was not on the list of potential replacements compiled by former managing director Fabio Paratici. Pochettino previously coached Espanyol, Southampton, and PSG.

Levy is in the process of appointing a new director of football, and like Paratici, this person will have their own opinions about who the new coach should be. In the end, Levy and his inner circle are the only ones who are fully aware of the reasons for passing over Pochettino, but it is unmistakably a risky move.

Pochettino’s rehiring could have been a gesture towards unity that would have quickly repaired the strained relationship between supporters and the team. It would have made sense from a football perspective and been a logical decision. Additionally, it would have been a loss for Chelsea since it would have prevented them from hiring a manager who seemed ideal for their team.

If Pochettino succeeds at Stamford Bridge, Spurs supporters will be faced with the continual reminder of the legacy they once had and may have had again. Regardless of who Levy now chooses, they will be constantly compared to Pochettino.
