Can Rory Burns solve England’s opening misery?

Unrated in ICC Rankings, Rory Burns is a potential opening batsman that can solve England’s top order miseries in test cricket.

England has not been able to solve their opening order problems in test cricket, which has failed time to time. The 28-year-old Rory Burns brings explosiveness with composure in his innings.

Rory Burns can be another permanent wicket keeping choice for England if they decide to drop Jos Buttler or Jonny Bairstow. This can be done to adjust some formations. Rory Burns has only received test cap from England till now. However, in future he definitely looks to join the Limited over squad of the English Cricket team.

Burns had not performed well with the bat in the initial few innings. He has played 8 matches until now, where he averaged only 31. However, the recent innings against Australia where he scored his maiden ton, would definitely give him confidence. Burns debuted against Sri Lanka in 2018. He is right now paired with Jason Roy, who was also selected for the Ashes. Burns has not only played a great innings, but he became the first English opener apart from Alastair Cook to bat out a full day in a home Test since Joe Root against Australia at Lord’s in 2013.

Not only his composure, but his ability to permanently seal his spot in the England Cricket team can bring a lot from his performance. Batting in Edgbaston wasn’t easy in the first test. We saw batsmen struggle, where only Steve Smith from Australia held his nerve.

Rory Burns has the ability to bat according to the situation. In case the score is worth chasing in lesser overs, he & Roy are great opening pairs. The only problem that could arise for Burns in start is his international inexperience. He is a county cricket and global T20 leagues veteran. But when it comes to international cricket, he lacks experience.

Under-rated by many, Rory Burns has definitely shut his critics down with an exemplary innings in the first test of Ashes, 2019. It would be worth watching how he bats for the remaining of the Ashes and if he can prove to be the dark horse.
