He was rested earlier for all the squads to Australia before being added to the test squad alone later.

This comes as a huge blow to the Indian team as they already will miss the services of Indian captain Virat Kohli who will return to India after second test on account of his first child birth. With Rohit Sharma almost ruled out, the captaincy dilemma also comes to the end between the Mumbai lads Rohit and Rahane as Ajinkya Rahane is set to captain the team from the second test.

Replacement to be Shreyas Iyer

Along with Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma is also set to miss out on the test series as both haven’t recovered yet. The tall fast bowler had an impressive tour last time around while forming a dangerous bowling trio with Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. If Rohit misses out, the team management wants Shreyas Iyer as the replacement who is already in Australia for the limited over matches as BCCI announces no replacements will be sent from India.

The Indian number four batsman in white ball cricket averages around 52 in the first class cricket and a debut for him in the test series is around the cards if he replaces Rohit. Mayank Agarwal will be the first choice opener in tests and it will be interesting to see who pairs up with him for the first test with the options of Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul. Rohit Sharma fitness update has opened up the chances of these youngsters to cement their test place.

It will be a tough task for the Indian test team without the likes of Kohli and Rohit, but it will also be an opportunity for the experienced players like Pujara and Rahane to step up and get the best out of the youngsters in the line up. India went on to win the test series in Australia last time around and will look to maintain the same energy though Australia are a much stronger side now than in 2018.
