SD Huesca vs Real Madrid, Match Preview

Real Madrid’s last match was a 1-2 defeat at home to Levante. Brazilian defender Eder Militao was initially given a yellow card for bringing down Levante’s Leon in the 8th minute, but a VAR review changed this decision and Militao was instead shown a straight red card. Madrid struggled to impose themselves in the match after being brought down to 10 men. In spite of this, Madrid did well to take the lead when Marco Asensio finished off a quick counter-attack from the defending champions. Midfielder Toni Kroos quickly released Asensio with a brilliant pass from the outside of his foot, and Asensio’s finish went into the bottom corner.

Just after the half hour mark, Jose Luis Morales latched on to a great cross from Jorge Miramon to equalize for Levante. Read Madrid keeper Courtois was helpless and couldn’t stop the shot from hitting the back of the net. It was always going to be difficult to score again with just 10 men, but some shocking display of set-piece defending from the Los Blancos allowed Levante’s Roger enough time to control the incoming cross from Enis Bardhi and turn to shoot it past Courtois. The scoreline didn’t change after this and Levante returned home with all 3 points.

The defeat has put Real Madrid in 3rd place, with Barcelona’s win in their match sending them above their arch-rivals. As of writing this article, the title holders are 10 points behind first placed Atletico Madrid, who are tipped to win the league this season. Disappointing exits from the Copa del Rey and Supercup earlier has left the Real fans distraught and Zidane’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu hotseat will greatly depend on what his team does in the Champions League and the remainder of the La Liga season.
