5. Chris Wood to Newcastle United

Newcastle moved swiftly to replace injured striker Callum Wilson, with Chris Wood strengthening Eddie Howe’s striking options after the club triggered a release clause for the Burnley player this week. Aston Villa signed Everton left-back Lucas Digne in a deal worth up to £25m just last week. The move follows several days of negotiations, in which Villa beat off interest from Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham for the former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona defender. Digne said manager Steven Gerrard was “the main factor” behind his decision to move to Villa.

A player of Digne’s pedigree and quality in the January window is a great addition to the Clarets’ squad and his arrival should excite everyone associated with Aston Villa, especially for a bargain fee of just over twenty million.

3. Anwar El Ghazi to Aston Villa

Dutch international Anwar El Ghazi went the opposite way of Lucas Digne as he joined Everton from Villa on loan till the end of the season. El Ghazi became Everton’s third signing of the January transfer window after the arrivals of Ukraine left-back Vitalii Mykolenko and Scotland right-back Nathan Patterson.

The 26-year-old has scored just one goal in nine Premier League appearances this season. A player who proclaims “I will work hard and give everything I have. That is the least you can expect from a player” is definitely someone passionate enough to feature in our top 5 signings we feel.

2. Kieran Trippier to Newcastle

Newcastle United made their first signing under their new Saudi ownership right at the start of January, with England star Kieran Trippier joining in a £12million deal from Atletico Madrid. The club’s new owners – led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – have given Howe their backing this window and have made a statement signing in landing right-back Trippier from La Liga champions Atletico on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

1. Philippe Coutinho to Aston Villa

In a move that came as a shock to many, Barcelona’s attacking midfielder Phil Coutinho moved to Villa Park on loan till the end of the season. The Brazil international said that it was clear that he wanted to be there after speaking to Steven Gerrard about his and the club’s ambitions.
