Midfielders have a simple job- to create goals, sense out danger, and play out passes. When we think of central midfielders, we don’t really think of goals. Unless we are thinking of players like Frank Lampard, Bruno Fernandes, or Yaya Toure.
These three midfielders changed the way midfielders played the game. Having a keen eye for goal, they have pushed the boundaries for what is and what is not expected of midfielders in the PL nowadays. Here, we look at most goals scored by a midfielder in a PL season, so hang tight!
Most goals by midfielder in a Premier League season- Lampard leads Toure, Bruno, Gerrard

As evidenced above, these three midfielders have pulled off numbers that even strikers would be proud of. Bruno Fernandes managed 28 goals in the 2021/22 season in all competitions, with 19 of them coming without penalties. Toure managed 24 in all competitions in 2013-14 when Manchester City were dominating domestic football.
In the 2022-23 Premier League season, Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard has also scored 15 goals without penalties.
PL midfielder with most goals in a single season- Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard
But it is Frank Lampard’s 2009-10 season with Chelsea that is remembered as the season where a midfielder broke the scoring record for most goals in a PL season. With 22 goals in 35 league games, Lampard set a gold standard for midfielders that followed him.
There are 10 strikers that have taken home the Golden Boot in Premier League history scoring less than 20 goals, which shows the quality Lampard possessed. Often playing as a second striker at times behind Didier Drogba, the Stamford Bridge legend was a force to reckon with.
It is unlikely any midfielder ever tops that number. Steven Gerrard came close in the 2008/09 season when he set the record for most goals by a central midfielder in a PL season as he netted 16 times in Liverpool’s second-placed finish. But since then, he was been toppled by his English counterpart in the very next season.
