Man United vs Newcastle predicted lineups & Preview
The match between Manchester United and Newcastle United will be the 19th match to be held as both a League Cup and an FA Cup final. Both of these teams faced off in the 1999 FA Cup final, which Man Utd won 2-0 to complete the unprecedented triple of Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. This is Manchester United’s first League Cup match against Newcastle since a 2-1 home victory in September 2012, when they split their three encounters (L1).
The 47-year gap between finals is the biggest in League Cup history, and it was caused by Newcastle United, who are playing in their first final since 1976. The Magpies have lost their past four major finals (1974, 1998, and 1999 FA Cup finals, 1976 League Cup final) after a 6-2 aggregate triumph in the 1969 Fairs Cup final against Hungarian club Újpest.
Only Liverpool has ever played in more League Cup finals (10), and it will be Manchester United’s 10th. Just Liverpool (9) & Manchester City (8) have won the League Cup more frequently than the Red Devils (5), whereas only Arsenal (6) and Tottenham (5) have lost it more frequently than Man United (4).
The longest losing streak in Wembley history for a side is held by Newcastle United, who have dropped their past eight games there. It has been 67 years and 295 days since their last triumphed in the national stadium when they defeated Manchester City in the FA Cup final in 1955.

Manchester United will play in this game for the 53rd time at Wembley Stadium (neutral venue only), which is at least 11 more than any other team. They will join Chelsea (28) and Manchester City as the third club to host 20 (neutral) games at the stadium since it reopened in 2007 (21).
No manager has amassed more victories in the League Cup since Eddie Howe took up management duties there for the first time in the 2009–10 campaign (22, level with Pep Guardiola). Since Steve McClaren won the League Cup in 2003-04 with Middlesbrough, English managers have lost five finals; he hopes to be the first to do so (Jewell, Redknapp, Parkinson, Smith, Mason).
The manager of Manchester United, Erik Ten Hag, is about to make history by leading his team to the League Cup final. He will be the very first Dutch manager to do it. Except for Ruud Gullit’s Newcastle losing 2-0 to Manchester United in the 1997 FA Cup final, Dutch managers have won three of their eight domestic cup finals in England (all FA Cup). Guus Hiddink and Louis van Gaal won the other two in 1999.
Callum Wilson, a striker for Newcastle, netted at Wembley for England in a November 2018 match against the USA. Following Jackie Milburn and Robert Lee, he may well become just the third player to score at the stadium for both Newcastle and England.
Marcus Rashford of Manchester United has scored 12 goals and provided six assists in his previous 15 League Cup games, contributing to a total of 18 goals. He has five goals and two assists just this season alone in five games, giving him an average of one goal or assist per 40 minutes in the competition. Going into this game, Manchester United has a win probability of 50%, whereas Newcastle United has a win probability of 25%.
