Preston North End’s friendly against Manchester City next week will be moved behind closed doors, according to reports. The Lilywhites were set for a 7pm kick-off on Tuesday, 27 July against Pep Guardiola’s men, with the game scheduled to be held at City’s impressive Academy Stadium.

City’s training ground has been hit by a Covid-19 outbreak in the last few days, which forced them to close the academy building at the Academy for a deep-clean. The number of positive cases from an Academy training camp had jumped into double figures, with all under-18s and under-23s players told to stay away from the training complex for 10 days.PNE’s friendly was meant to have supporters in attendance, including away fans, at the 7,000 seater-ground.

Following a period in the wilderness of League One between 2011 and 2015, Preston have enjoyed much more stability in the Championship over recent years, with their lowest finish since returning to the second division coming when they ended last season in 14th place – still 21 points clear of safety.

Preston will fly out of the blocks and should give a second-string City side, whose defence is far from perfect, a few problems early on, but the sheer class of the Premier League champions, as it does on 99 out of 100 occasions, will ultimately shine through the longer the game goes on. It hasn’t been all that long since these two last met in a competitive fixture, having faced each other in September 2019 in an EFL Cup tie at Deepdale, and it was City who came out on top with a 3-0 victory.
