It looked to be a long night for the Kop as Jonjo Shelvey fired Newcastle into a shock lead before the Reds fought back to claim all 3 points at Anfield. Here at Alley Sport, we bring you the Liverpool vs Newcastle highlights and the key moments that shaped this intriguing Gameweek 17 fixture in the Premier League 2021/22 season.

Jonjo Shelvey’s stunner opens the scoring at Anfield

Liverpool started the game off poorly, with a lack of precision in their play. In what looked a promising move, Thiago gave away the ball near the Newcastle box trying to be too clever which prompted a counter from their opponents. Even though they managed to take the sting out of the attack, it must be said that lax Liverpool defending was responsible for the space that former Red Shelvey found himself in as he fired a superb, whipping long range effort into the bottom corner past a rooted Allison to give the Magpies a surprising lead.

Liverpool’s controversial equaliser

Newcastle looked to have cleared the danger from an Andy Robertson corner and were expecting referee Mike Dean to stop the game as Isaac Hayden went down clutching his head in the Liverpool box making the clearance. However, the game continued and Sadio Mane chipped a perfectly weighted cross across to Diogo Jota, who finished at the second time of asking after Martin Dubravka pulled off an outstanding save from his initial header. This was the point the game turned in the Reds’ favour and even Eddie Howe mentioned in his post match conference that it had a huge bearing on their mindset, as it felt so unjust to the Magpies.

Mo Salah scores yet again

With Newcastle exasperated, errors started creeping into their play. Even Jonjo Shelvey, generally so calm in midfield, underhit a simple pass to his goalkeeper and as the clock struck 25 minutes, Mohamed Salah had scored yet another time to put Liverpool into the lead. The Reds’ showed again why it is so costly to make any sort of errors while playing against them with crisp, deadly finishing. With this goal, Salah matched Leicester marksman Jamie Vardy’s record of goal involvements in 15 consecutive games, a brilliant personal milestone for the Egyptian which he will hope to surpass next time around.

A cagey second half settled by Trent’s brilliant strike :Liverpool vs Newcastle highlights

It was a more even affair in the second half at Anfield as Newcastle looked steadier and more compact defensively after their half-time regroup. They fought off everything that Liverpool threw at them and looked to be pushing for an equaliser, just when Trent Alexander-Arnold came up with something outrageous. The Liverpool-born full-back picked up the ball 25 yards out and smashed in a thunderous shot into the top corner giving the goalkeeper absolutely no chance. The goal effectively sealed the tie and earned Liverpool a valuable three points at Anfield.

Man of the Match- Trent Alexander-Arnold : Liverpool vs Newcastle highlights

Not just for his staggering Kevin de Bruyne-like effort that sealed the points for the Reds, but for his defensive stability and awareness as well, the Liverpool full-back deserves the man-of-the-match award. In a game where Newcastle put pressure on his side, especially through the wily Alan Saint-Maximin, he held firm managing the most interceptions and dribbles in the game (both 3).
