With Newcastle exasperated, errors started creeping into their play. Even Jonjo Shelvey, generally so calm in midfield, underhit a simple pass to his goalkeeper and as the clock struck 25 minutes, Mohamed Salah had scored yet another time to put Liverpool into the lead. The Reds’ showed again why it is so costly to make any sort of errors while playing against them with crisp, deadly finishing. It was a more even affair in the second half at Anfield as Newcastle looked steadier and more compact defensively after their half-time regroup. They fought off everything that Liverpool threw at them and looked to be pushing for an equaliser, just when Trent Alexander-Arnold came up with something outrageous. The Liverpool-born full-back picked up the ball 25 yards out and smashed in a thunderous shot into the top corner giving the goalkeeper absolutely no chance. The goal effectively sealed the tie and earned Liverpool a valuable three points at Anfield.
