Liverpool vs Brighton and Hove Albion, Match Preview
After being knocked out of the FA Cup by arch-rivals Manchester United, Liverpool bounced back by scoring their first league goal of 2021 and winning their first league match of the year, against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side. After missing a few chances earlier, Sadio Mane played the ball across the face of the goal, and after both Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris missed the clearance, Firmino tapped in to put his side ahead.
In the second half, Hugo Lloris again failed to hold on to a shot from Sadio Mane, and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold fired the rebound into the back of the net, doubling Liverpool’s lead.
Tottenham’s new signing Pierre-Emile Hojberg who has impressed since his transfer from Southampton, pulled one back for the hosts two minutes later, but the goal only proved to be a consolation as Spurs couldn’t build on top of that to comeback in the game. Sadio Mane, who had played well without reward upto that point, scored Liverpool’s third goal of the match, after Joe Rodon of Spurs failed to properly clear a cross into the area from Alexander-Arnold.The win should be a good morality boost for Liverpool who suffered crushing defeats against the likes of Southampton and Burnley in the league earlier, which saw them drop down to 4th in the Premier League table.
Should they lose against West Ham next week, they will fall to 5th. Klopp and co will try to recover from what has been a slump in form in recent times with wins over West Ham and later Brighton. This is our Liverpool vs Brighton and Hove Albion Preview.
Liverpool vs Brighton and Hove Albion Preview: Head-to-Head H2H
Liverpool and Brighton have played against each other 32 times so far, with Liverpool winning 19 of those encounters. 9 games have ended in a draw, while Brighton have only won 4. Klopp’s side have had the historic advantage over the Seagulls, and have won all of their Premier League matches against them barring a 1-1 draw in November.
In fact, Brighton’s last win over Liverpool came 37 years ago in the FA Cup. They haven’t beaten Liverpool in a league fixture in nearly four decades. Current odds are also firmly stacked against Brighton, with the Seagulls struggling at 17th, in a relegation battle this season.
The most recent fixture between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw at the American Express Community Stadium on November 2020. Diogo Jota, who is injured now and will not feature against the Seagulls, scored Liverpool’s only goal in the reverse of this fixture, picking out the bottom-left corner after being picked out in the area by Mohamed Salah. The latter’s second-half effort was ruled out due to offside, and Brighton were given a late reprieve when Pascal Gross converted a stoppage time penalty to earn a point for the Seagulls.
