Liverpool vs Brighton, Match Preview

After being knocked out of the FA Cup by arch-rivals Manchester United, Liverpool bounced back by scoring their first league goal of 2021 and winning their first league match of the year, against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side. After missing a few chances earlier, Sadio Mane played the ball across the face of the goal, and after both Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris missed the clearance, Firmino tapped in to put his side ahead.

In the second half, Hugo Lloris again failed to hold on to a shot from Sadio Mane, and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold fired the rebound into the back of the net, doubling Liverpool’s lead.

Tottenham’s new signing Pierre-Emile Hojberg who has impressed since his transfer from Southampton, pulled one back for the hosts two minutes later, but the goal only proved to be a consolation as Spurs couldn’t build on top of that to comeback in the game. Sadio Mane, who had played well without reward upto that point, scored Liverpool’s third goal of the match, after Joe Rodon of Spurs failed to properly clear a cross into the area from Alexander-Arnold.

The win should be a good morality boost for Liverpool who suffered crushing defeats against the likes of Southampton and Burnley in the league earlier, which saw them drop down to 4th in the Premier League table. Should they lose against West Ham next week, they will fall to 5th. Klopp and co will try to recover from what has been a slump in form in recent times with wins over West Ham and later Brighton.

Thiago should start in midfield, alongside Georgino Wijnaldum and James Milner, after the latter put in an impressive performance against Tottenham.
