Joao Felix- The New Portugal Prodigy
Joao Felix, the newst addition to a star studded Portugal prodigies, recently completed a transfer to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019 for a staggering 126 million euros. He is tipped to be the rightful successor to Antoine Greizmann at Atleti.
But who is Joao Felix? Is the hype well deserved?
Joao Felix was born in Viseu, Portugal on 10 November 1999. He began his career in Os Pestinhas, before moving to Porto in 2008. After 6 years at Porto’s Academy, he was released due to his underwhelming physicality. Benfica swooped in for the forward and after spending two and a half years in the youth set-up he was promoted to Benfica B at the age of 17.
During his time as a player in Benfica B, in 6 months he was directly involved in 9 goals (4 goals and 5 assists) in 17 appearances. He was then promoted to the first team. At the age of 18 he made his first team debut for Benfica and further improved his level of performances.
In the recently concluded season, he made 43 appearances in all competitions for Benfica. He scored 20 goals and further added 11 assists to it. Making his average a goal assisted or scored every 93 minutes.
During his time at the youth sides, he usually operated as an attacking midfielder, playing in behind the striker as a no 10. However, since then he has progressed and has played as a Left Winger, Right Winger as well as a Striker. He even operated as a Centre Forward (a 9 and a half) playing off another Striker. A player who can create and even poach is one to watch out in the future.
Joao Felix can really be a game changer for the team he plays for, due to his speed and skills, adding to his goal scoring abilities. He has expressed his wish to win a Balon d’or. The future will certainly tell if he’s destined for the prestigious award and a shining career.
