Indian Premier League IPL postponed, check the new dates here
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to postpone the Indian Premier League. This came out due to the building pressure by the authorities. The board was adamant on not postponing the IPL and earlier called out for closed door games. IPL is now postponed to next month.
However, Alley Sport reports that due to the repercussions of COVID-19 Novel Corona virus, franchises and authorities called out BCCI to postpone the tournament. Many state associations like Mumbai & Delhi pulled out from hosting IPL fixtures. This led to BCCI taking the measure of postponing the IPL.
In a media advisory issued by the BCCI, it states that the IPL has been suspended till 15th April, 2020 as a precautionary measure. The media advisory states that the BCCI is concerned about all the stakeholders and public health in general. It has taken the steps to ensure people have safe cricketing experience.
BCCI will also work with the Government of India and Ministry of Youth Affairs and other related ministries in due course, BCCI has stated.
There were speculations earlier that BCCI is adamant on conducting the IPL as per the decided dates, i.e. 29th March onwards. However, the Road Safety World Series has also been called off keeping in mind the outbreak. BCCI may now take the appropriate actions. Now the IPL is postponed too.
It is not sure that the IPL will start from 15th April, it is only a precautionary measure as of today. If the virus spreads, the BCCI will be forced to cancel the Indian Premier League this year. This would mean heavy losses for the franchises and the state boards.
Alley Sport also understand that former IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla earlier insisted on carrying on the IPL. However, he later tweeted that he welcomed BCCI’s decision to postpone IPL.
