How many Champions Leagues have Real Madrid won? – Counting their total UCL title wins
Real Madrid have a record 13 UEFA Champions League trophies to their name. Los Galacticos were a dominant force in the 1950s when the competition under the name of the European Cup started. They actually won the first five finals of the competitions.
Below is the table of the first five EC finals, and the first five finals won by Madrid. As we can see, the goal-crazy Madridistas were running rampant during that time. Their dominance was only ended by SL Benfica in 1962 when the Eusebio-led team beat Madrid 5-3.
1955–56 | Real Madrid | 4–3 | Reims | Parc des Princes, Paris, France |
1956–57 | Real Madrid | 2–0 | Fiorentina | Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, Spain |
1957–58 | Real Madrid | 3–2 | AC Milan | Heysel Stadium, Brussels, Belgium |
1958–59 | Real Madrid | 2–0 | Reims | Neckarstadion, Stuttgart, West Germany |
1959–60 | Real Madrid | 7–3 | Eintracht Frankfurt | Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland |
La Decima and beyond- How many Champions Leagues have Real Madrid won?
Madrid’s next European Cup win came in 1966 against Partizan. This took their total to 6. They would have to wait 32 years for their next win at that stage when a goal by Predrag Mijatovic was enough to land the victory. This is the second-longest wait between two UCL titles for any club, behind Inter Milan’s 45-year wait between the 1965 and 2010 title win.
Titles followed in 2000 and 2002. They had to wait 12 years for La Decima but won it in an impeccable fashion by beating Atletico Madrid in 2014. This was the first of four UCL titles won by them between 2014 and 2018.
Surprisingly, Madrid have won 13 out of the 16 finals they have played in. Benfica (1962), Inter Milan (164), and of course, Liverpool (1981) are the only teams to beat them in the final. It remains to be seen if they can add to that tally, but teams around them like Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, and PSG will not make it easy for them.
